About Back to About page.
Aramoho Wanganui Rowing Club has an active membership of over 100 rowers aged from 13 to late 60's. Our membership is drawn from Wanganui High School, Wanganui City College and Nga Tawa Diocesan School tertiary students and the local community.
The Aramoho Wanganui Rowing Club teaches the sport of rowing, offering its facility to all sectors of the community. A broad selection of new 'Novices' join annually, usually from the school sector, and are nurtured through the grades to senior level and even to national selection. They develop not only the ability and technique of how to row but an excellent training and work ethic. The teamwork, club spirit and camaraderie that comes from this stays with them through a lifetime. The club has structures in place for those who wish to achieve elite sporting excellence and for those who wish to take part on a purly recreational level. Its aim is that all and any who wish to take part in the sport of rowing, at whatever level be encouraged and made welcome. Our efforts are supported by a strong Rowing School Parents support group which draws and encourages the support of our member’s families into the sport in a number of ways, coaching, regatta officials, committee members, fundraising events, etc.
The Club not only achieves high accolades in the sport of rowing, it also has an active input and profile in our community. Taking part in local events, the Club hosts RNZ Coaching Courses, Water Safety Course for new rowers, run a Learn To Row program and a very successful “Business House Challenge” putting another dimension to the club’s community involvement where corporate teams are coached over 8 weeks and compete at a mini regatta celebration at completion.
NEW MEMBERS: Are always welcomed. The Club competitive season runs from October to March. A learn to row programme runs for School-age (or any age) rowers every pre-season.
TRAINING: Rowers, coxswains are sorted into training squads and assigned coaches, and training plant. The training schedule will be advised by the coach and training sessions can range from 3 or 4 sessions per week to multiple daily sessions for the Senior competitive rowers. Rowing takes commitment and discipline to train, work hard and importantly includes teamwork, camaraderie, good times and achievement. Novice coaching is voluntary and we ask you to appreciate the time and effort they put in. They deserve your respect, good manners, attention and timeliness in relation to training and learning the skill of rowing.
PARENT SUPPORT: Parent support is welcomed and valued in assisting the Club and rower to succeed. WHS has an enthusiastic Rowing Parent Support Group which works well at co-ordinating support and fundraising for the School/Club rowers. Both the Club and the Support Group hold monthly meetings which parents, members, etc are welcome to attend. The Executive meets 7:30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each Month at the Clubrooms.
Support Group Contact: Lisa Murphy (WHS) or Hamish Lowe (Nga Tawa). Club Contact: Michele Old
MEMBERSHIP & FEES: The Club charges an annual subscription which is put towards the day to day running expenses of the Club. Additionally, those who will compete at regattas pay an RNZ Affiliation (Competitive Licence) fee and regatta seat fees, travel, accommodation costs are additional. School rowing fees are mitigated by fundraising events throughout the year.
REGATTA INFO: The Club/School attends a schedule of regattas throughout the season. Regatta fees are not included in Club Subscription fees and are payable at the time of each regatta. Regatta fees vary, locally approx $4 per seat. For away regattas a boat haulage fee is charged (calculated by distance and divided between the number of rowers attending. Transport and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the individual.
FUND-RAISING & WORKING BEES ETC: Annual Subs do not cover everything. Plant and ongoing maintenance is a costly business. The Club has a hardworking fundraising committee which endeavours to raise funds for additional expenses and projects and our members and supporters are asked to support and join in these activities when they occur. Past activities have included pie sales, trivial pursuit evenings, firewood sales, hay gathering, etc. Also from time to time it is necessary to have Club-shed working bees in readiness for events and occasions and sometimes with adverse weather conditions plant needs to be moved upstairs and clean-up after a flood. We ask and appreciate our members/supporters to help out (MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK). Club maintenance is ongoing and never ending – if you have skills or interest in mechanical, woodworking, boat repairing, painting, cleaning, food preparation we can certainly use you!!

History Back to About page.
In 1954 a new clubhouse and boat storage was proposed by the committee of the day with work commencing on the foundations and structure by voluntary labour. The existing club shed hall and boat storage was completed in 1959.
In 1972 the club embarked on an extension to the club shed building adding a lounge and motorboat storage on the northern end. This project was undertaken by club members and funding for the project undertaken as construction proceeded.
Throughout the early years with the exception of 1940-45 (II World War) until the mid to late 70s the club drew its membership from mainly working class tradesman, apprentices employed by the NZ Railways, Freezing Works, and Private and Public entities.
In the 1980s the demographics changed with young people going to University, travelling offshore, seeking professional careers and membership of the three Wanganui rowing clubs dwindled to a low ebb. The difficulty in keeping clubs actively and competitively viable led to discussions, the result being, in 1986 the merger of the then oldest club in Wanganui, Wanganui Rowing Club and the Aramoho Boating Club took place and the Aramoho-Wanganui Rowing Club was formed.
Throughout the history of the club, there has been strong leadership and periods of significant success of both National and International level. This history is well recorded in the lounge trophy room both on honours board information and photographic displays. This gallery of achievement gives an appreciation of teamwork, success, motivation and striving to become part of the club and NZ rowing history.

Academy
Although Whanganui High School and Nga Tawa School are key 'feeders' of raw talent to AWRC. It was recognised that there is a lot of talent and desire for rowing in the larger Whanganui region. To develop this we have initiated the Acadamy under the leadership and control of our Head Coach Pedro Figueira. This is proving to a great success involving other schools as well as our excellent rowing neighbour the Union Boat Club.
