Jake Newton wins Whanganui Secondary Sports Award: Junior Champion of the Year

Jake let his hair down at the above awards ceremony recently, proudly demonstrating his trophy and certificate.

Since then, Jake has been selected to attend a NZ U19 Development Camp at Karapiro in December. Micky Zhang, who has joined us as a coxswain, also featured at the above awards for his prowess in speed skating.

Messina Su’a and Mila Graham selected to attend the NZ U 21 Development Camp

Club stalwart, Messina Su’a, who has recently returned from studies at Otago, has been selected for the above Camp. Also selected is Mila Graham, who has recently joined us from the Waikato Rowing Club – it is certainly a change to see someone from Waikato transfer to AWRC, a reversal of recent trends!

Thank you Grumpy Old Men Enterprise (G.O.M.E)

Grumpy Old Men Enterprise (G.O.M.E.) are exactly what they say they are – grumpy old men, but with a twist. This group will take any of your broken old appliances (i.e., whiteware such as ovens or dishwashers, television sets, DVD players, stereos, computers, microwaves, lawnmowers, brass, copper, copper wire, sheet metal, aluminium, stainless steel, TVs, and car batteries). From here, they strip the appliances or items down and trade them in for cash, which they then donate to local groups and charities. This organisation has supported individual AWRC athletes over the years, enabling them to continue in the sport, and we want to support them in any way we can!

If you have scrap you could offer, contact Jim on 027 444 7474. Alternatively, pop over to their spot at 28 Hinau Street; they're open 9 am–12 noon, Mon–Fri.

Here's a clip of them on 1News a few years back! Click the photo below to watch the feature.

RIP Bruce Treader

Bruce joined the former Aramoho Boating Club in 1953 and immediately enjoyed success stroking a Novice Four to victory at Regattas at Wanganui, Napier and Wellington, as well being a member of the Clubs Dalzell Four Trophy race that season. During the following seasons Bruce was a prominent member of the Clubs Senior Eight, before shifting to Canada where he passed away recently. Our thoughts are with his family.

Thank you to our Masters

Our Club is fortunate to have a number of former and in some cases current, former rowers who contribute toward keeping our Club sustainable with mowing grass and many other repair jobs around the clubhouse. An example recently was when the apron lighting required repairs costing $150.00 and Allan Luff organised a whip around which was totally met by this group.

Considerable work has also been undertaken on the Finish Tower and in providing decent launching areas at the Rowers Camp for our visiting rowing Clubs. Many will be involved conducting the Jury Cup Regatta on Saturday 9 December for the benefit of all our active members, so if you see the old grey or balding heads working quietly take time to thank them for their ongoing support.

New boat christened “Dave Dudley”

Our lounge was filled to capacity to christen our new 4 Coxless Quad/Four the “Dave Dudley” on 3 December.

Club Captain, Rylee Dudley paid tribute to her Dad who has coached at AWRC since she commenced rowing at WHS in 2012 and many athletes have subsequently benefitted from his time and wisdom since then, which has included frequent podium visits with successful crews at North Island Club, NZ Champs, North Island Secondary Schools and Maadi Cup.

Dave also coached daughter Ella over 4 seasons and wile Colleen has been integral with her support as Camp Mother over Daves time as a Coach at AWRC.

Pictured are Dave, Colleen, Rylee, Ella Dudley, and Thomas Monaghan.
