Annie Pawson – Our Newest Life Member!

“Our latest Life Member Annie is flanked by proud husband Ken, and re-elected President Tom Monaghan.”

Annies citation and recommendation for the honour, was made by Barb Hammond.

Annies involvement at AWRC began when son Gus commenced rowing at WHS in 2007, later followed by another son, Hugh.

She has been, and continues to be a dedicated supporter, being re-elected onto the Committee at the AGM. Annie has been Club Secretary and a fund raiser extraordinaire over 16 years.

Annie acknowledged the support of Ken and her boys over her years of service and is already looking forward to her next fund raising venture - wine sales which will be promoted very soon.

Jackie rowed in the NZ Womens Coxless Four at the recent World Championships held in Belgrade, with the crew finishing 1st in the B Final, and in doing so secured a start for NZ in this event at the Paris Olympics in 2024. We congratulate Jackie on keeping the Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club name on the international stage!

50 Years Since Graham Hill rowed for NZ Juniors

In 1973 Graham (Hunter) Hill, from WHS, was selected for New Zealand’s first ever Men’s crew to compete at the World Junior Championships at Nottingham, United Kingdom.

The NZ eight was coached by the legendary Rusty Robertson and finished in 5th place in the final which was conducted over 1500 meters at that time.

Hunter is in the 2 seat of this action photo of the crew in training.

Whanganui Rowing Winter Series September 2023

Aramoho Whanganui’s Boys Under 17 Coxed Four enjoyed victory at the 5th Blinkhorne and Carroll Winter 6 Km Series on 10 September with their overall time of 22:19.31 producing the best prognostic time of 86.46% from 21 starters.

The Club Under 16 4X+ of Robyn van Dijk, TeAtura Potaka-Osborne-Milner-Skudder, Ava McDonough, Lauren Davies with cox Charlotte Matthews also performed with credit, only just missing 2nd place by a mere 0.03 seconds with their prognostic score of 86.18%!

Our Club acknowledges the generous sponsorship of Blinkhorne and Carroll as a number of our members have enjoyed the financial benefits over the Winter Series.

Subscriptions Now Due

Our recent AGM approved the subscriptions recommended by the Committee for the forthcoming season and these need to be paid on or before 30 November in terms of the Club constitution.

We request that when renewing subscriptions can you please also complete the 2023/24 Membership Form which can be found on the AWRC website www.aramohowhanganuirowing.nz website, together with the various updated fees.

We do this as sometimes individual information such as contact information changes over time and it is now a requirement under the new Incorporated Societies Act.

When you complete and send the on line form, it arrives in the Secretary Inbox where it is validated and then forwarded onto our hard working Treasurer, Thelma, who can then monitor payments.

Whinge and Wine Wednesdays (WWW)

These gatherings continue to attract a good cluster, generally on a fortnightly basis. Bruce and Diane Osborne recently did an extensive overseas trip and gave us an overview of their trip this past WWW. Come along to the next one to meet some familiar faces around the club!

“Diane and Bruce visited the famous Maadi Rowing Club in Cairo. The boats are stored outside and don’t appear to have been modernised greatly since the Maadi Cup was presented in 1944!”

Te Potaka-Osborne-Milner-Skudder Breaks NZ Indoor Rowing Record!

Te recently broke the NZ Concept 2 Indoor Rowing Record for Lightweight Girls 13-14 year olds over 100 meters, when it took her only 18.5 seconds to cover the distance.

Well done Te Atakura who will be attempting the 15-16 Years Lightweight Girls record next!

Axel Dickinson Renews AWRC Rowing Director Contract

Your Committee are delighted to report that Axel has recently renewed his contract with the Club for a further 12months.

Axel has had a transformational impact since joining AWRC and we look forward to enjoying further successes.

Security at the Club

Our Masters Rower and Police Officer, Colin Wright, commented recently that a number of mobile phones were left exposed inside the building near the doors leading out to the apron area, while their owners were presumably on the water training.

Please note that the Club is unable to guarantee security or take responsibility for any money or personal items at the Club Shed, so let’s not make life too easy for intruders who will happily help themselves if an opportunity arises!

On a positive note, we are currently installing lockers which can be locked, for items that need to be secured, but it is still recommended that valuables be left at home.

RIP

We note the recent passing of Doris Schneider, wife of Aramoho Red Coat and Empire Games Representative Joe Schneider and also Judith Harrison, wife of former Aramoho rower and coach, Ted Harrison.

Our condolences go to their respective families.

Ongoing Newsletters

Grader has compiled these newsletters for the past 5 years, and Maddie Powers “modernises” them for us (which is much appreciated). Grader will increasingly be taking a more modest role at the Club in future, and we are wondering whether the Newsletters are actually read by many these days, with other communication mediums such as “Chats”, “Facebook” and the AWRC Website all providing news and information.

If you would like these Newsletters to continue, can you please email awrcrowing@gmail.com and our new Committee can decide whether is practical to continue with them.
